Commiting a crime against your will

It can be human trafficking when a person is exploited to commit a crime against their will. It can be when someone:

  • Sends you to different places to produce or sell drugs.
  • Forces you to beg, steal, or rob people.
  • Forces you with threats or violence to commit a crime when you don't want to.
  • Refuses to give you something you're addicted to (like drugs or alcohol) unless you do something illegal.
  • Forces you to import or export drugs.

Michael

Michael just moved to Iceland after getting a job and housing through his friend Fred. At first, the jobs were part-time cleaning but soon Fred started taking Michael out driving at night to look at houses in different neighborhoods. One night Fred hands Michael a crowbar and challenges him to break into one of the houses. Fred threatens to hurt Michael’s children in his home country if he does not do it.

Michael is afraid of Fred so he does it, and soon Michael finds himself frequently breaking into houses chosen by Fred. Despite the fact that Fred takes all the profit from the break-ins, Michael does not dare to object him because he feels like Fred would hurt him or his family “if he does something stupid”.
